TOP POST OF THE DAY · Binance loses billions in a hack

Posted by Watcher.Guru (@WatcherGuru) on X

Why it matters: The most-shared market post of the last 24 hours. Early on-chain tallies put the theft at over $5.6 billion across bitcoin, ether and stablecoins, and later estimates went higher. For anyone in Switzerland holding crypto on an exchange, it's a blunt reminder that coins parked there are only as safe as the exchange itself.

2. CZ: user funds are safe

Posted by CZ (@cz_binance) on X

Why it matters: Binance's co-founder, who stresses he no longer runs Binance.com, says he expects all user funds to be covered. The quick freezes by Tether (about $971m) and Circle (about $823m) he thanks also show how much control a few stablecoin issuers have over "decentralised" money.

3. Binance sets aside $6.34bn to cover the losses

Posted by Wu Blockchain (@WuBlockchain) on X

Why it matters: Binance says it has reserved more than $6.34 billion of company funds, including $5 billion already held in the affected tokens. If that holds, customers are made whole, but the market still sold off: confidence in big exchanges took a hit even where the money didn't.

4. SNB earns CHF 19.1bn in the third quarter

Posted by CNBC (@CNBC) on X

Why it matters: Gold and foreign-currency holdings lifted the SNB's year-to-date profit to CHF 44.2 billion. That matters for you because the full-year result decides whether the Confederation and the cantons get a payout next spring, and it can still swing if the franc keeps rising or gold keeps falling before 31 December.

5. Gold slides to its lowest since November 2025

Posted by *Walter Bloomberg (@DeItaone) on X

Why it matters: Spot gold fell about 2% to roughly $3,940 an ounce. In francs the drop is slightly bigger, because the franc also gained against the dollar on Friday. Worth knowing if you hold gold as your crisis insurance: it didn't act as a safe haven today.

6. Tech stocks in bear-market territory

Posted by The Kobeissi Letter (@KobeissiLetter) on X

Why it matters: After weak results from Amazon and Intel, a long list of US tech names now sits 50% or more below their highs. The AI selloff reaches Swiss portfolios through global ETFs, and on Friday money moved toward safe havens: USD/CHF fell to about 0.82.

7. Tanker hit by limpet mines in the Strait of Hormuz

Posted by Financial Times (@FT) on X

Why it matters: The FT reports Iran hit a tanker with limpet mines, while Reuters cites security sources on the attack. Oil rose on the news. For Swiss households, every spike in Brent shows up in heating oil and petrol prices, softened only a little by the strong franc.

8. Banks raise their oil price forecasts

Posted by *Walter Bloomberg (@DeItaone) on X

Why it matters: Banks surveyed by the Wall Street Journal now see Brent averaging $90.40 a barrel in 2026, up from $88.13. Oil that stays expensive keeps inflation sticky, one reason the Fed and the ECB are holding rates instead of cutting.

9. Lagarde to leave the ECB early

Posted by Jamaica Gleaner (@JamaicaGleaner) on X

Why it matters: ECB President Christine Lagarde will step down about nine months before her term ends; several reports name 7 February 2027 as her last day. Her successor will steer the euro, and EUR/CHF is the exchange rate that matters most for Swiss exporters, cross-border shoppers and holiday budgets.

10. Switzerland's China trade upgrade bucks protectionism

Posted by Reuters (@Reuters) on X

Why it matters: Xi Jinping and Guy Parmelin mark one of the most favourable trade deals Beijing has given a European country. The business federation economiesuisse says that over time 99.8% of today's Swiss exports to China would be duty-free, good news for watchmakers, machinery and pharma.

11. Bern studied what a UBS move abroad would mean

Posted by Le Temps (@LeTemps) on X

Why it matters: The Federal Department of Finance has analysed a possible move of UBS's headquarters abroad and stresses it would carry high costs for the bank. UBS is one of the SMI's heavyweights, so the capital-rules fight behind this debate moves both its share price and Switzerland's place as a banking hub.

12. Apple buys Zurich music-AI startup Samplab

Posted by Consulate General of Switzerland in New York (@SwissCGNY) on X

Why it matters: Apple acquired assets of the Zurich startup, founded in 2020, and brought its team on board. Also on X today, unconfirmed: citing the Tages-Anzeiger, a jobs platform says Apple is taking about 9,500 m² of extra office space in Zurich-Altstetten, room for an estimated 500 to 700 jobs. Apple hasn't confirmed this.
